TERRY CROWDER
Terry Crowdy is the author of popular books on military history and espionage subjects.
His latest book
Deceiving Hitler (2008) gives a detailed account of how British counterintelligence developed its famous ‘double cross system’ and how turned Nazi spies became an important weapon in the Allied arsenal. Using recently declassified documents,
Deceiving Hitler shows details the deception methods employed by the Allies to such good effect at key stages of the war.
Crowdy’s career as an author began with a number of illustrated titles on French Napoleonic subjects for Osprey Publishing. Utilising research carried out in the French military archives in Vincennes, these books focused on the story of the French infantryman through the period. He also explored Napoleon’s Egyptian Expedition and also a profile of the French Navy at the time of Trafalgar. As a result of these publications, Crowdy was a contributor to
The Encyclopedia of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (ABC Clio, 2006).
Throughout his research into the Napoleonic period, Crowdy recognized that the role of espionage had been underplayed in histories of the subject. In 2006 he wrote
The Enemy Within, following the story of spymasters and secret agents through history that provides an overview of how espionage has developed from the ancient Sanskrit Vedas to the Terror attacks of the modern day.
Crowdy is also the author of
French Resistance Fighter (2007) and
SOE Agent: Churchill’s Secret Warriors (2008) for Osprey that provide a harrowing portrait of the work and heroism of underground fighters against Nazism.
Crowdy is also the author of the popular
Military Misdemeanours (2007), a semi-satirical take on the peculiar, bad and imbecilic personalities and institutions that have stained military history, described by one reviewer as a ‘humorously outrageous work’.
Crowdy is a member of the Institute of Fire Safety Managers and is a safety adviser for Historic Royal Palaces, the independent charity that looks after London’s most prestigious landmarks, including the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace and Kensington Palace. He lives in the South East of England, in the county of Kent with his journalist wife Sarah.
